Quartu is a very large municipality that rises on the Campidano plain. On the eastern side we find the majestic Mount of the Seven Brothers,rich in forests from which we get cork,habitat of protected species such as deer, golden eagles and wild boars. In addition to its vast environmental offerings,the city encompasses centuries of history,religious architecture such as to earn third place as the most populous city in Sardinia.
Molentargius: a natural park with bike and walking trails and boat tours
The Molentargius Nature Park is the wintering and nesting site of several species of waterfowl.It is an exceptional area that has freshwater and saltwater basins, separated by the arid “Is Arenas” plain. The freshwater areas consist of the Bellarosa Minore and Perdalonga ponds, which were created as rainwater expansion ponds. The saltwater zones, on the other hand, include the ponds of the former production system of the Cagliari State Salt Pans, consisting of the Bellarosa Maggiore or Molentargius (first evaporation pond), the Quartu Pond (second and third evaporation ponds), the other saltwater ponds (Cagliari salt pans) and the Perda Bianca (former mother water basin).
The Park of the Seven Brothers: the largest Park of Sardinia
Several streams flow through the park, which then give rise to a number of waterways ,the most important being Su Pau, which flows into the territory of Quartu Sant’Elena in the locality of Flumini. The mountains are mostly covered with Mediterranean scrub: holm oak, cork tree, mastic tree, strawberry tree, viburnum. These mountains are the natural habitat of the Sardinian deer (Cervus elaphus corsicanus), a subspecies of the European deer, which occurs here in large numbers and are a protected species. Within the park are well-preserved remains of Nuraghe (Bacu Malu, Nuraghe Monte Arbu, Nuraghe Sa Fraigada), Tombs of the Giants (Is Concias) and waterfalls (Sa Spindula).
