The Sinis Peninsula

Discovering the Sinis Peninsula

The area is located on the central west coast of Sardinia and is a place of great importance both archaeologically, but also from a naturalistic point of view, with its wonderful beaches and ponds full of life. An ideal area for nature and culture lovers. In this part of Sardinia it is possible to come into contact with a history linked to the ancient world and in particular that of the Phoenician city of Tharros founded in the 8th century BC.

Immersion in the Knowledge

The territory of Sinis, includes the protected marine area from Cabras, which stretches between the bay of Is Arenas and the Gulf of Oristano, including the island of Mal di Ventre and the islet of Catalano, which conceal ancient wrecks in their depths. Cabras preserves some evidence of the Neolithic period, such as the village of Cuccuru is Arrius and numerous nuraghi. Evidence of which can be found in the town’s civic museum. We proceed to visit the ancient city of Tharros, which was founded by the Phoenicians in the 8th century B.C. and was a flourishing trading centre in the Phoenician-Punic period.

The city of Tharros preserves monumental remains of public and private buildings dating from the Punic to Byzantine times; the two necropolis develop instead in suburban area, north and south of the town.
