The Way of the 100 Towers

The Way of the 100 Towers

The Way of the 100 Towers is characterized by the presence of numerous defensive towers along the route, is located in Sardinia and traces the entire coastline of the island in an anti-clockwise direction, creating a unique and truly evocative ring-route because of the places along the way. The Cammino 100 Torri is composed of 8 major routes: Via degli Angeli, Via Sarcapos, Via Ogliastra, Via Gallura, Via Catalana, Via dei Giganti, Via delle Miniere, Via del Martirio. The route is subdivided into 70 stages that can be completed in 45 to 60 days. The combination of the 8 routes creates the 100 Towers Walk, winding along the coast for an impressive 1284 km. It passes through 60 nature sites, walking among salt pans and flamingos, mines and port towns. In addition, the route since its creation has been divided into three colours: green, yellow, red. Depending on the difficulty.

The Angels’ Way

The Angels’ Way is the starting point of the 100 Towers Walk, and has a total length of 62.4 km. It starts from the Torre della Scafa, a small coastal tower located in Cagliari in the locality of Sa Staffa, from which it is possible to observe almost all the coastal towers of the Gulf of Cagliari. The arrival point of this first Via is located in Villasimius. The Via takes its name from the Golfo degli Angeli (Gulf of Angels) where, according to legend, some angels asked God for a portion of land as a gift; He gave the angels a place (Gulf of Cagliari) where people loved and respected each other and lived happily. The itinerary continues along the city’s famous Poetto beach, with its beautiful white sand, which stretches for about eight kilometres . It is precisely in this first approach that the 100 Towers Walk begins to unleash its potential for wild beauty and unique charms, touching on the areas of Mari Pintau, Kala e Moru and Solanas, before arriving in the more touristy and well-known Villasimius.

Sarcapos Way

The Sarcapos Way stretches for 143 km along the Sarrabus coastline, including the municipalities of Castiadas, Muravera, San Vito, Villaputzu and Villasimius. In addition to the Quirra jump, the Sarcapos Way includes mountain peaks such as the Sette Fratelli Massif (1,023 m) and the Cardiga Massif (676 m), which reach the sea and enrich the landscape with steep escarpments, beaches and small alluvial plains. The path runs along coastal flat areas due to the deposition of alluvial material; it is here that one encounters numerous ponds of varying sizes, the most important of which is that of Colostrai. Maritime communication routes were once active in the river port on the Flumendosa of Sarcapos (present-day Santa Maria di Villaputzu), dating back to Punic-Roman times, and more recently Porto Corallo at Villaputzu.
Sarcapos or (Sarcopos) was an ancient Sardinian city of Phoenician-Punic and Roman times located in the Sarrabus sub-region, to which it etymologically gives its name.

The Mining Way

This is the section of the 100 Towers Trail that crosses the south-west coast of Sardinia. It crosses the first Geo-mineral Park to be recognised as a Unesco World Heritage Site. A route through the most beautiful wild beaches and industrial mining architecture, which was of enormous importance in this area because it was one of the areas where the largest quantities of lead and zinc were extracted, being the first in Italy for productivity. It was in Buggerru, called ‘petite Paris’ because the mining executives who had moved to the mining village with their families had recreated a certain cultural environment. There was the first strike in Italy by miners protesting for better living conditions and wages in 1904.

The Way of Martyrdom

This is the street with the most religious connotation, named after the union of the martyrdom sites of Sant’Antioco and Sant’Efisio. From the island of San Pietro (Carloforte), we travel along the island of Sant’Antioco through Calasetta and Sant’Antioco itself, where the Gulf of Palmas will accompany us to the salt pans and Porto Pino. The final destination is Cagliari. Passing through Chia, Pula and Nora, concluding the 100 Towers Walk after 70 stages and 1284 km, Sant’Antioco and Sant’Efisio represent, together with Nostra Signora di Bonaria, the patron saints of Sardinia, with festivals of a popular and folkloristic nature, much felt by the faithful, such as that of Sant’Efisio, which has been held from 1 May to 4 May for 367 years.
